If you can tell me how to successfully seal the inspection pan for a Spicer T18 transfer case. Mine seems hellbent on leaking for eternity.

Have it decked, get a good gasket and a cast cover for it.

Lightly put silicone on bottom of cork gasket, place gasket on case.

Bolt down pan lightly with NO silicon on the pan side of the gasket.

Let sit for a few hours so gasket can take shape.

Unbolt pan, apply silicon to pan side of gasket, rebolt pan.

Brag about how you can get cork gaskets to seal.

2) Where can I find this magical tube?

I should have clarified - it’s in the vehicle and there’s no way I’m dropping the t-case.

That might do the trick. I think I’ve been using grey this whole time. Also, copper gasket maker - bad idea?

I mean, it won’t work for you here, but the non-washable version is really good for sealing tiny leaks in convertible tops. It’s basically liquid plastic.

1.) This:

http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Gasket-9613…

cut into a template. Use punches for the holes.

2.) Coat with this:

http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-80062…

before installation.

3.) Profit

Check the surfaces for trueness before doing this if you can. If the gap is big with a feeler gauge you may need Ultra Black RTV vs. high tack. If they aren’t bad, use high tack instead.

Look into Loctite 518 anarobic gasket maker. there are generic versions of this stuff too.

I’m glad you asked.

The surfaces must be very clean. I usually use MEK to clean gasket surfaces since it dissolves most gasket material, wear gloves.

Make sure the surfaces are super clean, you cannot have any oil on them or else you won’t get a good bond.

Apply your favorite gasket adhesive; use a lot of it, go all the way around each bolt hole, don’t worry too much about trying to keep it off the threads of the bolts but don’t go crazy and fill up a tapped hole with the stuff. I have a friend who likes to spread it around with his finger. Wear gloves. Note: do not use quick dry adhesives, most of them compromise performance for curing time.

Make sure that the gasket adhesive is continuous around the perimeter with no air bubbles.

Assemble parts finger tight, don’t torque them at this time but they should be fairly snug.

Wipe excess adhesive from the outside of the parts. If you don’t have at least some adhesive spilling out the sides, you didn’t use enough.

Let cure for an hour or 2. Long enough for the adhesive to start getting thick but not so long that it has cured. Most adhesives take about 24 hours to cure 1-2 should be long enough to where they start to develop a skin but aren’t cured all the way through. This should help to fill in the low spots a little better.

Torque parts as normal.

The real key to this is making sure the parts are clear of oil and using enough adhesive. Some people don’t like to make a mess but unfortunately that’s part of using adhesives, wear gloves and don’t worry about it.

ETA: if you screw any of it up, start over. Botching a liquid gasket without starting over is rolling the dice if you don’t want it to leak. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t.

There are really only two options, bud, and I swear by both of them. I have used Hondabond HT and Hylomar 5173/5174 products on motorcycle cases, truck diff covers, and other things that contain oil and like to leak. They leak no more.

Be sure to run the bead on the _inboard side_ of the bolt holes - LOL - and around them... That will ensure that the oil doesn’t sneak out there.

Hondabond HT is good to 600*F (315* C) find it at your local Honda Powersports dealer or online.

Good to 300* F (150* C)

Hylomar Blue is also good stuff and has a higher working temp 480* F (250 *C).

Hey dude, tried to reply to an older post to not clog up the front page. I used to go by SoftRock ( http://softrock.kinja.com/ ), I haven’t posted in a few years and cannot remember my passwords or how to post to oppo. A quick google search said I need to have author status. You’re the only screen name I really remember from back then. Hoping I can get some help!
